New Zealand and Australia

New Zealand and Australia

KoalabjørnAustralia is a country in Oceania situated south of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. The country is the worlds 6. largest on the basis of surface area and there are 21,3 million inhabitants settled there. The name "Australia" is derived from the Latin word "Australis", meaning "southern". People associate the country with kangaroos, the Great Barrier Reef and their wild nature. The indigenous people from Australia is named Aboriginals.

New Zealand is an independent state in the south-west of the pacific ocean. The Maoris called the country for Aotearoa, which mens "The long white clouds land". The Maoris are the indigenous people from New Zealand. The capital of New Zealand is Wellington. Most people associate the country with hunting, kiwi birds, their landscape, lakes and animals. Their landscape is similar to the Norwegian landscape.

During the first world war, there was a division called "The New Zealand and Australian Division". This was created  under the battle of Gallipoli in 1915. At the commencement of the was, New Zealand did not have enough infantry battalions to be able to form their own division, while Australia did not have enough to form a second division, so the countries separate brigades were set together. After Gallipoli, the Australian 4th brigade were transferred to" the newly formed Australian 4th division", while New Zealand formed their own division, "the New Zealand Division".

Both nations adhere to secular common law legal systems acknowledging the rule of law; and the
separation of powers.

Politically the two countries have got a good relationship, but the relationship between the individuals are a little bit more tense. It is like the relationship between Norway and Sweden. A Norwegian would have been offended if someone had thought that he or her was Swedish  The people are not suppressing each other, men they are laughing of each other, such as we make fun of Swedes by telling Swedish jokes.

What I think of America

WHAT I THINK OF AMERICA..

I have earlier written a little about America in general but in this post, I will focus on what I think of the country.

Almost every individual have different opinions about the USA. Starting with agreeing or disagreeing with their politics, their way to handle crises, economy and other huge and important things. I can confess that I have never been interested in neither of the cases. I think it is hard to write about what I think (or even think about what I think) about the whole continent because it is so big. Also, I think about the 50 United States of America when I think about the country, not the whole continent.

Anyway, there are different things I think of when I hear the word "America". The first is the famous singer and entertainer Justin Bieber. He is from Canada which is another country but is now living in America. He was also discovered in America.

I don´t associate Justin with America just because I like him, but because his name is a very global name that people talk about. But Justin Bieber is not the only musician from America. Different other singers like Eminem, 50 Cent, Rihanna, Beyonce, Chris Brown and further are popular singers from America today. We have also been globally influenced by the music from the states. Country, rap, and blues are music genres that we can relate to the great country.

Beside music, the Statue of Liberty is one of the things I associate with America. The statue is a symbol for peace, and I have seen it in many contexts since I was a little girl. The statue is placed in the mouth of the Hudson River, in the harbor of New York.

New York is one of my favorite places in America as well as California. I have never been to the states, but I am dreaming to go there. In New York I can imagine lots of people, extreme shopping possibilities and cosy cafe visits. Times square is a world famous area in Manhattan, New York. This is the only neighborhood in the city prohibiting tenants to install exterior neon advertisements, which made the place into a spectacular icon for the city of New York years ago. This is also the place to be at New Year´s Eve.

I associate America as the country of possibilities. It is known for it´s large film industry and most of the worlds biggest superstars was discovered here. Such as Sylvester Stallone, Julia Roberts, Kevin Costner, Orlando Bloom and Leonardo DiCaprio. In Los Angeles, California, there is a district named Hollywood. This place has since the early 1900s played a key role in the film productions, partly because of the favorable light conditions, better weather and a more varied landscape than New York. Many people move to the USA to live "the American dream".

As you can see, there are lots of things that comes to mind while thinking of America. Some other things than already mentioned are american football, fast food, hamburgeres, obese people, skateboarding, celebrities, shopping, relaxing and nice weather. I can only think of beautiful things when dreaming of the country, and I think this is because it´s huge influence on the world.

Furthermore, I associate both President Barack Obama and earlier presidents with America. Obama was actually the US´s first black president. I think this is amazing after so many years of racial segregation (also known as Apartheid). This went on from the early years of the USA´s history until late in the1900´s. America was also implicated in world war 2, which lasted from 1939-1945. They played a big role in the war and wound up ending it by bombing Japan with the first atom bombs.

Last but not least I will mention technology. America is one of the top greatest countries when it comes to the development of technology. They have brought Apple products to the marked which is in my opinion the best thing ever made within this topic. They have sold it through the globalisation and when we asked my class at school who owned a Apple product, 25-30 people  said that they did.

If it was not for the technology, the globalisation and science, I would not had been able to write this blogpost at my Apple MacBook Pro right now. I have also come to the conclusion that I like America, and I love the USA.

WALES

WALES

The United Kingdom (UK) consists of England, Wales, Scotland (who together make up Great Britain) and Northern Ireland. In this blog post I am going to focus on Wales. You can see the flag of the country on the right side of the text. It is white and green with a big, red dragon on it. The flag got it's official status in 1959, and "The red dragon" is a sign for Wales nationalism.

Wales is a peninsula South-West of Britain. It has got an areal at ca. 20 768 km² and according to statistics from 2009 there are 3 004 600 inhabitants living there. 346 100 of them lives in the capital named Cardiff. Cardiff is not only the capital of Wales, but also the biggest city. Cardiff was in the year 1900 used to transfer coal.

There is two official languages in Wales. Those are English and Walsh. Around 600 000 people in the world knows how to speak Walsh. It is very hard to speak. Though it is a mix with both English and Latin loanwords. Walsh is native for some human in Wales. Others prefer speaking the global, understandable English. They have got an accent that reminds people of a kind of sing-song accent. The reason for that is because wal sounds are stretched out and stressed. And there is a huge glide for high-pitch to low-pitch. There is also a big difference about North- Welsh and South-Welsh.

Regional climates in the United Kingdom are influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and latitude. Northern Ireland, Wales and western parts of England and Scotland, being closest to the Atlantic Ocean, are generally the mildest, wettest and windiest regions of the UK, and temperature ranges here are seldom extreme. Wales has warmer temperatures throughout the year than Scotland, and has milder winter minimal than England, but cooler winter maximal than Northern Ireland.

School starts at September the 1st. Most of Walsh children starts at school in an age of 4-5. However, all education between 5-16 are free like in England. The preschool education in Wales is also mostly like the one in England and United Kingdom. Primary school are at the age of 5-11 and secondary school is from 11-6. After this comes the following education. A significant number of all students all over Wales are educated either wholly or largely through the medium of Welsh and lessons in the language are compulsory for all until the age of 16. Welsh medium education is available to all age groups from nursery through to schools, colleges, universities and adult education. Also, some schools both private and official have school uniforms. Students are not allowed to wear casual clothes at school. I think this is very cool. It looks nice and properly and there is no visible distinction between the students when it comes to social classes.

The National Assembly for Wales opened in 1999. It is their political body made up for 60 elected Assembly Members (AMs) which makes decisions affecting Wales. They meet in the Senedd building in Cardiff which opened in 2006 and has won an award for its sustainability and green credentials.

The Welsh Government is made up of Assembly Ministers drawn from these elected members and is headed by the First Minister of Wales. The Welsh Government has responsibility for policy and budget priorities and is scrutinized by the legislature, the National Assembly for Wales. In Wales they elect 40 members to the UK parliament where responsibility for some non devolved policy areas for Wales resides. The Government is referred to in that Act as the Welsh Assembly Government, but to prevent confusion about the respective roles and responsibilities of the National Assembly and the Government, the devolved administration became known as the Welsh Government in May 2011. The Welsh Government consists of the First Minister, usually the leader of the largest party in the National Assembly for Wales; up to twelve ministers and deputy ministers, appointed by the First Minister; and a Counsel general, nominated by the First Minister and approved by the National Assembly.

Wales is divided into thirteen counties. However, about 70 % of the population lives in the three industrial southern counties: Glamorgan, Monmouth, and Carmathen. In South Wales most people used to work in the industry or in the coalmines. Wales' industry has changed drastically over the last hundred years. At the turn of the 20th century, the emphasis was on coal and steel in the south and slate in the north. The transport of these items gave rise to a strong maritime industry too. Coal exports, manufacturing and heavy industry have declined nowadays and have been replaced by new industries. Tourism and public services have taken over as the main employers within Wales. The shape of manufacturing has also changed. The traditional heavy industries have given way to lighter manufacturing such as electronics, parts and technology. Unemployment in Wales is higher than in both Scotland and England and wages are on average lower.

I have never been to Wales. The only place in the United Kingdom I have been is in London, England. I Really liked the place, although it is nearly 5 years since I was there. We went sightseeing, shopping and we even visited other points like the Big Ben and Madame Tussaud. However, I would really like to go to Wales some day. Just to be able to say that I have been there. I think that when I get older, it would be more properly for me to visit the country because the things to do like visit national parks, going sightseeing, visiting castles, museums and parks are not my thing. Although you can do normal things like play paintball and football too.

Anyway, Just so you do not leave this blogpost with a boring feeling, I will now give you some fun facts:
  • Wales is believed to have more castles per square mile than anywhere else in the world
  • The letters K, Q, V and Z do not appear in the Welsh alphabet at all.
  • All the statues surrounding Cardiff Castle are of animals.
  •  Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch is the name of a town in North Wales which translates as “The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio’s of the red cave”. It is believed to be the longest place name in the world.
  • The longest corridor in Europe is to be found in Llandough Hospital near Cardiff.
  • The currency they use in Wales is Pound Sterling

The NorthEast of America

The NorthEast is the oldest region in America and consists of New England and the Mid Atlantic States. New England is again devided into 6 states. These states are Connecticut, Rhode Island (the smallest state in the US), Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine (the northernmost state on the mainland). The region though comprises nine states. New York City is the biggest city in the United States, and is also a part of the region, such as Washington DC (district of Colombia).

The Northeastern United States is bounded to the north by Canada, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean to the south by the American South, and to the west by the American Midwest. The Census-defined region occupies a total area of 181,324 sq mi.

The United States of America

The United States of America

USA is also known as America which is not unusual since USA stands for the United States of America. The capital of the US is Washington DC (District of Colombia). The country is not like other countries. North- America is devided into 50 states. These 50 states represents 50 stars at the American flag.

Before I knew different people who lived in USA, I would say that an average american would look fat and lazy. This because of all the incredible fast food restaurants they have created. Mc Donalds, KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken), Subway and Wendys are some examples. Though not all of the 313 847 465 inhabitants looks this way.

Other things I associate with America is the Apple products, (which I belive is the greatest tecnological device of the century), different amazing cars like Ford and Chevrolet, and longboarding (especially California).

Besides being the coolest country in the world (though I have never been there), USA have got an amazing president. Barack Obama, which is the first black president in Americas history, have just been re-elected for 4 more years. I think that Obama is a very smart and succesfull president. He is also a democrat.

The age limit for voting in America is 18. Drinking is 21 and for driving you have to be 16 years old.

That was some real facts about the US, but how about some fun facts?

-Jimmy Carter was the first president born in a hospital.
-Smokeing weed is legal in 2 states
-The average person in the States uses 80-100 gallons of water each day
-There are no poisonous snakes in Maine
-The world’s highest roller coaster is located in Ohio
-The first US capital was New York City
-California grows more food than any other state
-The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco has enough steel wire in the cables to circle the earth's equator in 3.5 times
